The Phoenix HG15 takes advantage of the large amount of gain available from the Phoenix style circuit designed by Vic Keary.
This allows the HG15 to have more than enough gain to operate as a mic pre-amplifier. Combined with the Phoenix vari-mu style compression and also the active EQ this makes the HG15 a very easy to use device for recording from microphone sources. The sound is as big, sweet and natural as you should expect from a Phoenix type circuit.
The EQ is active within the negative feedback part of the circuit, so no additional amplifier stages are introduced when the EQ is engaged. This ensures that there are no negative artefacts introduced when using the EQ.
The HG15 can also be used with line level sources as a mix processor, or perhaps as additional gain and EQ/compression with another mic-preamplifier.
As always, it’s possible to run the HG15 beyond its normal operating levels. A very good example of this is when the HG15 is set to operate from a line level source but the ‘Input select’ switch is set to ‘Mic pad’. The large amount of extra gain and different input circuit configuration provides a new level of aggressive compression and saturation that can be very suitable for many sources. Still with the natural high quality valve sound that can be expected from a Phoenix type of valve circuit.
Experimentation is very rewarding with this unit!
